Five years after its implementation in the Group, the L.I.T. Air & Sea GmbH was named »Division of the Year 2023« for its outstanding performance. We spoke to Managing Director Michael Borowski about the division’s development and plans. One thing is clear: the success is based primarily on the strong team spirit.

Business at the L.I.T. Air & Sea is booming. Year by year, the order volume has been growing since the division was integrated into the L.I.T. Group in 2018. Now, Michael Borowski’s team is purposefully continuing its expansion course. The success is due to both the increasing demand for air and sea freight transports and the dedicated work of the team. »In the past five years, we have multiplied our turnover more than fivefold. We are even more proud that the additional work we have consistently put in as a team has now been rewarded with the ›Department of the Year‹ title. For us, this is the well-earned harvest of our jointly achieved performance and motivates us to do our work even better«, rejoices Borowski.

What the Air & Sea does
The extensive portfolio of services includes standard air freight shipments, ad-hoc charter flights, on-board courier services and hazardous goods deliveries. Other additional services include cargo consolidation, transport insurance and customs clearance. With two locations directly in Hamburg, the portfolio also includes rail shipments on the Iron Silk Road from and to China as an alternative to sea freight. In addition, the team in the hanseatic logistics metropolis also covers renewable energies as its newest line of business: This includes, for example, shipments of solar panels or hazardous goods such as lithium-ion batteries to Germany and abroad. »Looking to the future, we want to continuously expand our repertoire of services. At our office in Hamburg, we clearly see one mainstay in sustainable energies, which are in higher demand than ever on the market«, says Borowski.

Order processing in prime location
Currently, the Air & Sea is operating from five locations to handle its extensive range of services – in Barcelona, Bremen, Herford and, since last year, twice in Hamburg. Thanks to this strategic distribution of branches with optimal connections to northern ports such as Antwerp, Rotterdam, Wilhelmshaven, Bremerhaven and Hamburg, the division can manage orders centrally from Germany to neighboring countries such as Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Belgium. In Barcelona, the second largest container port in Spain, a dedicated team has been based since 2020 to process orders directly from the Iberian Peninsula.

Diverse team spirit pays off
In the early days, there were just eight employees working for the division. Today the team includes 35 sharp minds across Europe who manage the sea and air freight business. The colleagues enrich the team with various backgrounds. »Our high level of language competence, such as Polish, Spanish and even Mandarin, benefits us decisively in our exchanges with international partners and customers«, says Borowski. In addition, he says the door is open for additional language skills to be added to the team when a potential market presents itself in a new country. »I am proud to be part of such a dedicated team that sticks together
and is passionate about working at the Air & Sea. On top of that, our employees benefit from a special work culture and freedom
and can develop their individual skills«, Borowski explains.

Any growth requires transforming one’s business processes and implementing new ones. For this reason, each location in the division will have its own branch manager in the future in order to further optimize local processes. With Thomas Behneke, Head of Sea Freight, and Philipp Penkwitt, Head of Air Freight, this has already been the case for the Hamburg locations since last year. Marcel Stubbe has been responsible for this position at the Bremen site since July 2023.

Taking it high and far
At the moment, the sea freight segment clearly leads the race compared to air freight – in a percentage ratio of around 80 to 20. »Nevertheless, we see a lot of opportunity to strengthen the positioning of our air freight in the future. This will be possible, among other things, because of the synergy effects we can draw from the L.I.T. Group«, says Borowski. With this special pan- European infrastructure, the division has a competitive advantage in the market and can even position itself against top players without having to rely on third parties or external partners. »We can basically cover everything within our L.I.T. Group«, adds Borowski.

Accordingly, Air & Sea plans to position itself even better internationally and win entirely new markets – both through organic growth and acquisitions. »Next on our agenda are India and China. We can very well imagine opening up further markets in Southeast Asia such as Indonesia or Bangladesh, in addition to those in European countries and the USA. Many things will happen with us in the near future«, reveals the managing director.
